Shorter hours for all pvt sector
staff in Ramadan
By Mary Nammour
7 September 2007 (Khaleej Times)
DUBAI — The
working hours during the holy month
of Ramadan will be shorter by two
hours for all private sector
employees regardless of their
religion or nationality, a senior
official of the Ministry of Labour (MoL)
has said.
Any company found violating this
directive will be penalised as per
the Labour Law, said Humeid bin
Demas, assistant under-secretary of
the MoL. A Dh10,000 penalty would be
slapped on the violating companies,
besides a three-month ban.
The official warned: "If any company
is found discriminating between its
staff with regard to the shortened
working hours on the basis of
religion, it will be penalised.”

Dear Colleagues,
With the commencement of Ramadan
next week, I would like to take this
opportunity to remind you of the
following:
General Observance
During the Holy Month of Ramadan,
you are required by UAE law to
refrain from eating, drinking and
smoking in public between sunrise
and sunset. We would appreciate if
you could observe this law in your
workplace and when out and about in
the airport to avoid offending your
fellow colleagues and our customers
who may be fasting.
Food Outlets on Company Premises
Food outlets on Company premises
will be open for staff members only,
in keeping with the Ramadan fasting
spirit, the canteens will not be
accessible to external visitors or
customers. Staff members entering
the canteens will have to present
their ID card to the security at the
entrance of the canteen.
Working Hours
Working hours will be reduced from
42 hours per week to 32 hours per
week, for Muslim staff only. Because
of the diversity of operations
within the group, I would request
that each department makes its own
arrangements with regard to working
hours, and notify their own staff.
Where Muslim staff cannot be
released from work, overtime will be
paid, but this must be recorded
through the Daily Exception
Reporting system.
This is applicable to Emirates Group
offices based in the UAE only.
